Mission
The mission of Womanline is to provide high quality, affordable counseling services to women, especially those who have been sexually abused, and to prevent abuse of children and women through educational programs.
Vision
Our vision is to be known as a center of excellence in providing the highest quality counseling for women and a leader and active partner with others in the prevention of sexual abuse of children and women.
History
Womanline was founded in 1971 by Jane Britt as Birthright of Dayton, as a crisis pregnancy center, focusing on pregnancy and parenting support. The name of the organization was changed to Womanline in 1976 to reflect the growing number of women seeking services for counseling issues other than pregnancy. In 1982, Womanline initiated programs to address the growing problem of early sexual activity and teen pregnancy in local elementary and high schools. As these programs and support services expanded, the link between childhood sexual abuse and early teen pregnancy became more evident. In the ensuing years, the counseling staff began to see more women with histories of emotional problems related to sexual abuse. These trends continued into the 1990s, and in 1998 Womanline revised its mission to address this growing problem. Education programs were initiated soon after that, focused on positive parenting skills, the identification and prevention of child abuse, and care of newborn babies.
